Just saw SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK. I enjoyed it a lot -- Jennifer Lawrence was great.
Anyone seen THE GREAT GATSBY yet? I was planning on going to the movies this week and was trying to decide between that and MUD. I had a lot of interest in seeing GATSBY before it came out, but now that the negative reviews are pouring in, I don't know if I want to go in and be disappointed.

I saw GATSBY.
If you are fine with Lurhmann's visual style (as in it looks a little fakish like Moulin Rouge/HUGO) then I wouldn't find a ton of fault with the story. The GATSBY story is thought to be thin without Fitzgerald's prose so I've heard that mentioned as a problem but to be honest I think Lurhmann's visual style adds a lot of luxury to the scene and I felt that helped overall.
I enjoyed it. I don't know what everyone is so negative on it was a solid-to-good movie.
I'd check it out. I accidentally saw it in 3D and I think that 3D might have helped a little - I dunno.
The one thing that stuck out to me was the Jay-Z soundtrack. I suppose it shouldn't surprise me considering Lurhmann's past with movie soundtracks on Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet.
I just didn't care for that much Jay-Z. One or two might have been fine but it was a bit much.

I just saw Iron Man 3. I am a huge Marvel fan, and I really loved this movie.

Good to hear about Gatsby. I was tempted to see it, but the wife wasn't overly sold on it either. We'll just hold out for Hangover 3. Don't expect much from it, but we both love Las Vegas and will find enough funny about it. Then we'll just wait for Now you see Me to open

I've been sick the past few days, so I haven't been the theater to see Gatsby yet...should I make it a priority this weekend or should I see Star Trek first John?

Well I will be busy next few months. Gotta go see Gatsby ASAP, then gonna go check out Hangover 3 Tuesday Night then F&F6 then Now You See Me when it comes out.
Then June hits and we play a game almost every day for Summer League!

I'd make Star Trek a priority over most anything (and I'm not even a Trekkie). Gatsby was solid-to-good but if Star Trek is as good as the first it could be one of my favorite of the year. I like a lot of what Abrams does (and I haven't seen a single episode of LOST).

I saw MUD today. It didn't wow me, but I liked it. I'm not as much of a film buff as JScott or Swoosh, so it's hard for me to put my finger on what didn't make it exceptional, but I feel like something was lacking in some facet.
Going to see GATSBY on Friday. John, your review makes me less worried about being disappointed. I'm generally a fan of Leo so I don't know that I'll find him as annoying as you did.

It's not that I find Leo annoying (I like him in most cases) but you'll see what I mean, oldboy.
I'll be seeing Star Trek on Saturday (in 2D since JJ was against making the 3D version) and I'll let you know what I think.

Yeah, the trailer does reveal a bit about the story, but it wasn't a problem for me as I had already read the book.
John, why don't you watch trailers? Do you go out of your way to avoid them (entering the theater late), or do you just not go out of your way to watch them? I'm developing an interest in movies so it would be cool to hear your thought process on this as someone in the field.

I don't watch trailers because it gives you preconceived ideas about what the film MIGHT be. I feel that puts a film at a disadvantage right away. I like to go in completely blank and only be influenced by what's there. I go to a festival every year (Telluride) that doesn't announce it's line-up until the day it starts. You buy passes on blind faith and you see movies you know nothing about. When you can watch a movie this way it is he best in my opinion. I go to movies early/regular. Ill maybe watch a preview once but once I decide to see a movie I don't actively seek out promos or trailers or anything. If I know a director is doing something (Wes Anderson) I know I'll see that no matter what so I just go to those blind. It's all about the people involved. I don't make a big deal of avoiding them, I just don't particularly watch or listen to them on TV.

I try to not watch any trailer for a film I know I want to watch, dont mind them for films im not sure on though. I hate them on comedies for example when they show a really funny bit and then when you see it on the film you dont find it as funny anymore.

Just watched a bunch of clips from Only God Forgives. Weird reverse Oedipal complex feeling lingering in the air and tons of Gosling face. I'm excited.

Without giving away too much it's a cool flick (with too many lens flares) that does a good job continuing the evolution of the relationship between Spock and Kirk. Chris Pine nailed Shattner in this one too. I think the whole series was very well cast. Hope to see another Star Trek from Abbrams and company but I think he'll be onto Star Wars next. Maybe the guys who wrote Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Fringe can take the reigns and continue the franchise after JJ leaves. I'd like to talk more about this movie if anyone wants but I will wait until more see it.

So with the revival of AD, I restarted my Netflix account. I've watched a few solid movies lately.
CABIN IN THE WOODS was pretty good, but not great. It was something that I didn't mind watching but I probably wouldn't watch again. BEING JOHN MALKOVICH brought up some really interesting existential questions and I liked it for that. SUBMARINE was brilliant and I'd recommend that you guys watch it if you get bored.
