I probably see 40-50+ movies in the theater each year and that's just features.
I find that movies are better as a communal experience (unless someone breaks out a cellphone or something) and some films absolutely need to be seen on the big screen. In fact, I may go as far to say MOST films should be that way but that might just be personal preference.

Haha, you're correct about Tatum and his popularity. I do remember hearing that. Also I heard they wanted to do it in 3D and it wasn't ready for it. Plus, it was getting horrid early reviews. I expect that from this one but it looks better than the first and that was the worst movie I had seen in the theater until I saw Gangster Squad this year (another delayed movie, but that was for the theatre shoot-up). God, that's a piece of shit. Gangster Squad was terrible...but worst movie seen in a theater EVER? I don't know if it's even the worst movie I've seen this year, as both it and Broken City were pretty shitty, albeit for different reasons. I dunno man, it was pretty gratuitous for no reason. The characters made no sense, there was no story/arch for anyone, it was flat and - ugh - just brutal. I hated it. Absolutely hated it. Maybe not WORST film EVER but I don't recall a movie I walked out of after being so pissed at. I saw it as part of a double-feature with ZERO DARK THIRTY (which I dug) but yeah, I was much more appalled with the unnecessary violence in Gangster Squad than I even thought about the much-talked-about torture scenes in ZD30.

Sadly, I actually keep track of the movies I see (it was suggested to me a few years back when I was questioned on the sheer volume of films I watch)...on average, I see between 50-75 a year in theaters, but I watch over 250 movies a year total including movies watched on DVD. I'm told that seems to be a bit high...

Wow that's amazing, I'm the opposite on my movie watching then John is. I like the privacy of my apartment and don't have to worry about people talking behind me, or just being a nuisance. I really just can't get over spending that much on something I'm done with in 2 hours and can't watch again like purchasing movies or netflix when I feel up to it

Yeah but you can't experience Life of Pi at home.
LotR is different at home. It's not all just epic movies either. All movies are more intimate that way - in my opinion.
The noise/nuisance thing I totally get. Luckily some of the festivals I go to are crazy strict about it so it's like heaven. I purposefully go to off-time shows and out of the way theaters to have as few people in the audience with me.
But when you can have 600 people who understand the rules there is nothing better than laughing with 600 people because things are funnier - I don't know why, but they just are.

Fair enough, I'm just not that into movies as some may be. Could just be I'm not into large groups of people either

I'm told that seems to be a bit high... I might literally watch 2% of the films you do. I'd say I'm lucky if I watch 10 new/new-to-me films a year, most of which are at least two or three years old.

But if you go to mid-week matinees, Tuesday night films, Saturday mornings...usually you can avoid the riff-raff. Plus, if you can find the right movie theater, you will never go wrong (if anyone lives in Northern VA, my go to is the Angelika Film Center Mosiac...gets mostly independent fare, but I've never had anything other than a fantastic experience).

Even with the wife and kids, I still don't sleep as much as most people, so I have spare time to watch more movies and read more books than most people. 2. Not being in any sim leagues/internet non-sense the past few years has opened up my spare time even more, so that helps as well. 3. I don't have any real hobbies. If I'm not working or spending time with the family, I'm reading or watching movies.

Haven't heard of it, what is it? Going to IM3 this Friday. Heard good things Independant film with Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon getting good buzz...trailer doesn't give a lot away, really intrigued to check it out. FYI - Pretty sure I'm seeing an Iron Man 1/2/Avengers/3 Marathon tomorrow...I'm taking the day off from work. Is that as ludicrous a reason for missing work as I think it is?

Yeah, probably, because it's IM/Avengers and not LOTR or the new Wong-Kar Wai. Nah, seriously though, I really liked IM, thought IM2 was solid, Avengers was solid (though not great) but I hear IM3 is the best Marvel movie out there. Should be good! Thanks, I'll look into MUD. I hate trailers for movies that give anything away. I watch a trailer once, and if I decide to see the move I'll ignore all other promotional material for the movie until I see it. Best way to go into a movie in my opinion.

I knew the story (read most of the article series it's based on) so there weren't really any plot surprises for me. I enjoyed Mackie and The Rock the most. The movie did seem kind of uneven, if that makes sense.

I was going to catch it in theaters, but I have a feeling it is going to end up being a rental instead.

And even then I'm not sure...utterly disappointing.

I'll let you know my take
That's too bad Plossl. Was kind of geared up for a good Marvel movie.

I might be overly critical because after the first 8 hours, I was pretty much ready to just leave after not seeing the new movie of the group...but no, in the grand scheme of Marvel movies in "this Marvel Universe", it ranks somewhere behind Thor and ahead of Iron Man 2...so not something I'd recommend to the average moviegoer. But a negative review isn't going to derail this freight train...

I enjoyed Captain America and Thor a lot more than I was anticipating. They were both crucial to the Avengers arc (especially Thor) and were very well cast.
IM2 is only okay for me too. I don't like Rourke (other than The Wrestler). They had to introduce Hammer but it felt a little Spiderman 3 for me. Too many villains to track. Sometime two is fine but it led to too many climaxes.
I did like Marc Webb's The Amazing Spiderman more than most did (but I also really like [500] Days). Wasn't nearly as good as Raimi's Spiderman but I do like the casting of Garfield as Parker (he brings a different cockiness to the character that is needed) and I am always a fan of Emma Stone. Doc Conners isn't as cool a villain as Hob Goblin is though, but can you relaunch a series with the same bad guy in the first movie? Probably not.
