Not even remotely current, but me and the wife just watched The Great and Powerful Oz and could not believe how bad that was. We'd been looking forward to seeing this and were left just utterly pissed at how bad it was. That's what I get for trying to work on my backlog of movies and just sticking to TV series on netflix

I'm a HUGE Superman fan (read comics throughout the 00's and watched all 10 seasons of Smallville repeatedly). I was 100% OK with the neck snap. I understand Superman has to have a higher sense of morality than humans, but in a kind of unique way, he did exactly that. He chose the greater good (saving many lives) over saving his fellow man (Zod). You could see Zod was an animal that needed to be put down once he targeted CHILDREN. Kal-El gave him repeated chances to pull back and stop using heat vision and he refused. Only thing I didn't like was how Kal-El managed to get the upper-hand on Zod. Zod is a born fighter/warrior and should not be beatable by Kal-El under any circumstance, especially an untrained Kal-El. I know he's had the yellow sun energizing him for 25+ years compared to Zod's many fewer (and thus making him more 'powerful'), but fighting skills > pure strength. But the comics made a HUGE point about Superman as a non-killer. He don't even kill Joker after he killed Lois Lane. Also, In Man of Steel, Superman was fighting Zod in the middle of downtown destroying building and ultimately killing people. He didn't save many lives, he put WAY more in jeopardy than Superman ever would. That was maybe my biggest problem with the movie. That and the stupid scene where his dad went back for a DOG. Ugh. One more thing, the yellow sun doesn't over time make you stronger, it seems to be immediate, as we saw when Supes lost his power for a while without it. He doesn't store up the energy. At least not in the movie universe.

I need to get out and see Man of Steel. The theater near me is undergoing renovations and only half the theaters are open so its always packed.

But the comics made a HUGE point about Superman as a non-killer. He don't even kill Joker after he killed Lois Lane. Yup. But the modern world isn't as hopeful and positive as the 80's were. It's gritty. This, along with Batman trilogy, was perfect for OUR time. Ugh. There was no evidence of anyone dying. He put some in jeopardy, sure, but I didn't see anyone die to his actions. Not sure I'd qualify pilots killed mid-flight by Faora and others as something he could in any way have avoided. As for the dog, he was like a lot of people in this country. I'd do anything I could to save my puppies or anyone else's dog. He didn't KNOW he was going to die. He took a risk with the intent of saving the family pet. BTW, was that Krypto? If so, he shouldn't have bothered. A tornado couldn't have done shit to him, lol.One more thing, the yellow sun doesn't over time make you stronger, it seems to be immediate, as we saw when Supes lost his power for a while without it. He doesn't store up the energy. At least not in the movie universe. Yeah, that didn't make sense. He should not have an immediate boost in power. That's the one thing that bothered me.

How did you not see people die? They ran into the parking garage and in the next shot the parking garage came to the ground. Just because you didn't witness their bodies being impaled doesn't mean it didn't happen. They were fighting in the middle of downtown Smallville. Not one city block over was corn fields. Superman decided to stay and fight in the middle of town rather than not put citizens in jeopardy. That was the biggest fail in the movie. Well, that, and he is sitting under the gravity beam (on the other side of the Earth from the fight - you know.. where Zod is killing people) and just thinking, and waiting, and thinking, and waiting. Oh, but he saved Lois (who's a bankable star) so that makes it okay. As for the dog.. here.. This is how the scene happened.. Pa' Supes goes back (instead of Supes) to save a kid. No problem there, he's manages to save mother and child, everyone is happy. It was close, but he is safe.. wait.. what's this?! A dog?! Barking? I MUST GO BACK FOR THE DOG. We narrowly escaped with the mother and child but I will go back in AGAIN to save a dog with even greater risk to myself. The scene should have played out that he heard the dog, went to save it, AND THEN saved the kid. At least his death was worth it. What a waste of a life and what a stupid way to teach Young Supes' a lesson. And that's why you never save the dog.

The Great and Powerful Oz was one of the cheesiest movies I've seen in some time.
Man of Steel was very good compared to past Superman movies. Christopher Nolan has always had a darker side when being involved in hero movies ie directing Batman trilogy and now producing Man of Steel. I don't really have a problem with it because it sets up a more complicated story line rather than just saving the day.
Not sure if anyone has seen This Is The End, but I thought it was fantastic considering the lower expectations I had for it beforehand.

This is the end had its moments I was really surprised by how bad of an actor seth rogen is.
I saw world war z too, it was okay. I started reading the book afterwards and couldn't believe it was that different. The book was amazing and they turned it a typical blockbuster action flick.
I also saw grown-ups 2. Not a great movie but entertained me.

Now that I think of it, I don't think he does anything different, it is always the same role. Stoner, funny, nice guy, etc.

I ALSO liked it better than the first Wolverine movie. I ALSO thought that thing was a total piece of shit. With all that being said, I didn't think The Wolverine was good...it just happened to be better than a truly awful piece of shit. In fact, if it hadn't been for the scene after the credits (which makes less sense every time I think about it but it was still awesome), I'd have called it a bad movie. Now I call it a bad movie with a cool scene after the credits.

I actually enjoyed Wolverine but I am a fan of movies and don't try to over analyze every scene like most people here. I'm not THAT big into it. I just got for the entertainment and it kept me entertained.

Wolverine had problems, the stupid tacked on love story to name just one.

I notice screw ups all the time but if I was entertained, it was a good movie. If I'd go to theaters again to see it... it was great. Very simple ratings from me. Wasn't a fan of that love story but didn't turn me off. You're huge into movies, writing, directing, producing, etc... I am not. Now, watch a basketball game with me and the missed screen in the 2nd quarter leading to a half way guarded shot vs wide open will have me wanting to choke slam someone. I over analyze each thing every player does. For most sports for that matter.

I went and saw The Way, Way Back.
Fun movie. Sam Rockwell is very good, so are Alison Janney and Tony Colette. But I'm a big fan of both those actresses.
Tone similar to Little Miss Sunshine or Safety Not Guaranteed but different from both.
Steve Carrells most authentic performance since Dan in Real Life which I also like a lot.
Jim Rash and Nat Paxon are awesome!

FYI - For those who enjoy classic movies as much as the current fare out there right now, TCM is running their annual Summer Under the Stars this month. 24 hours dedicated to one individual film star for 31 straight days...it is why August is my favorite movie month of the year. It is a great way to introduce yourself to actors and actresses you have never experienced before or to catch little known treasures from film stars you are well aware of.
