Lots ofnpkayers coming to the mls to get more field time which is a huge deal for them in a world cup year.

Yea more playing time is great but no offense to the mls but if your playing for one of the better countries moving to the mls isn't the best way to get into the world cup squad, but we havent got a great number of options upfront so if he does really well he could still make it.

Well.. something is happening that the general public is missing. World Cup Managers might be telling fringe players they need to prove themselves (where better to play than a league that will be mid-season thus maybe giving a guy an advantage form wise)? Or maybe the respect of the MLS in the managing ranks is much much higher than we realize? Idk what it is but SOMETHING besides just money is making World Cup hopefuls flock to the MLS...

Was suprised to see Defoe going out to the MLS especially in a world cup year, is a nice pickup for Toronto, should score quite a few goals for them. 2 goals in his first 24mins with TFC

Good bump.
I was wondering if we should have a World Cup thread or if this would suffice.
I'll watch some of the World Cup but it will be sporatic at best. Looking forward to it though.

Thought about a World Cup thread but noticed this wasn't very popular but maybe it should have its own thread?
Brazil got pretty lucky last night, not quite sure how that penalty was given but hey.

Wasn't it Brasil who scored on themselves right away? I may be a bit behind the actual World Cup happenings

I don't think Brazil got one quality goal, they will have to really pick up their game as the competition stiffens. Modric was his usual amazing self he had some great opportunities and also some great crosses for Croatia.

I may be a bit behind the actual World Cup happenings Yea came back to win 3-1 in the end, got a highly debatable penalty to make it 2-1 then scored a 3rd in the 90th minute. Puma - Yea agree, sure they will though the pressure on them is pretty high especially in the frst match and the trouble surrounding the whole World Cup being in Brazil and not everyone wanting it there. Thought Croatia played pretty well, do like to watch Modric play. Still a bit annoyed Tottenham wouldn't sell him to Chelsea before they moved him to Real.

Actual soccer fans, please tell me was the US wrong to leave Donovan off the team? I think they were justified doing it but others close to me feel completely opposite. Just curious some other opinions.

Why was it wrong to leave Donovan off, he hadn't looked or played great in half a year and yes he is a very talented player who might help them for 15-30 minutes a game off the bench, but the focus is clearly on 2018 where the US should have a pretty dominate defense and some emerging young offensive talent. I am not going to say they will morph into a true power by 2018, but nobody will want to play them by then.

Having Landon Donovan on the team at this point is like having Shaq on your team in the early 2010s: you get him because he's a name, but ultimately disappoints.
Had fun watching Spain shit the bed today. Goalie nearly broke the record for most World Cup minutes without a goal. Then he allowed five.

Just curious some other opinions. I'm glad he's finally done. He's washed up and the team needs to move forward where he just isnt the star anymore. I was done with him when he refused to play for the US as one of the vets in the Olympics because of injury yet about a week or two later was playing for the Galaxy again. This is Dempsey and Bradley's team now.

I don't know much about the whole USA/Donovan thing but was kinda suprised to see him left out but like the guys were saying probably time to look to the future. Can't really see you guys doing alot of damage in your group though, tough one to get out of.
Holland were impressive yesterday, Robben and Van Persie torn Spain apart, loved that Van Persie header to make it 1-1. England get underway tonight, lets see if we can have a decent tournament for once.
