Summary
Trade
On February 8, 2028, the Pacers acquired SF Gerald Wilkins from Milan in exchange for Indiana's 2028 1st round pick, PF Tom Chambers and SF Rolando Blackman (who was immediately released from the team).
27 year old Wilkins was averaging 20 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game in 46 games with Milan, and comes to Indiana with 4 years left on a contract that averages $4.8 million per year.
Milan received the the Pacers' 1st round pick, which is currently slotted at 14th overall in the upcoming draft, and 27 year old Tom Chambers, who has averaged 10 points per game in his 425 game career.
Reaction
Many GMs around the league felt the trade heavily favoured Milan. Out of 19 GMs polled, 18 felt that Milan won the trade.
"Wilkins is a below average SF who's stats are inflated by playing on a bad team...Getting a lotto pick for that is pure robbery" Sydney GM commented via telephone from his Australian beach house. "Wilkins sucks, so getting anything for him was a victory and the fact he got a 99% positive lotto pick makes it a robbery"
Berlin GM responded by saying "Wilkins is the definition of mediocre, cashing in bigger stats on a bad team with a lack of options"
Knicks GM offered his take: "I agree with Sydney and Berlin. It’s not even about the pick panning out. I guarantee that whether that pick is top 10 or top 15 that Milan could now flip it for something better than Wilkins closer to the draft. It’s about value more than anything."
Washington GM agreed, and expressed his surprise that two potential lottery teams traded their picks in the same week: "Kinda surprising to see both Pacers and Athens moving their 1sts at this stage of the season tbh"
Solid Start
Amidst the controversy, Wilkins came out strong in his first 6 games with his new club, averaging 19.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. Highlights included a 31 point game against Brazil, a 26 point game against Belgrade, and a 22 point game against Toronto.
The Pacers went 4-2 in the sim, moving them 5 games back of the 8th and final playoff spot. The Pacers (28-26) have now won 11 of their last 14 games after starting the season 17-23.
