I haven't made one of these threads in a while but this is a pretty big trade so I figured i'd throw this up. My thoughts on the deal are that Bayi is getting a really versatile player in Magic Johnson who is only 28 to go with Duncan. He also got Rodman in this deal who i'm assuming will start along with Magic and Duncan in the front court. I do like both of those players and obviously a guy like Furlow for the bench but I think I lean towards San Fran here with him getting a lotto pick (#7), last year's #7 in Shawn Marion, another mid-late round pick, a strong defender in Alvin Robertson, and a solid backup big man in Chris Dudley.
It's tough to break up a title team but it was financially impossible for Magic, Scott, Penny, Sampson, and Thompson to all be on the roster next season. Since Penny already got his extension the Warriors were looking at 55,312,450 in salary with two 18 million max players heading into FA and needing to fill four roster spots. Now he is currently at 40,742,481 with 9 guys signed next year and while he still can't full max Thompson and Sampson after his draft salary is added, he can max Sampson and attempt to near max Thompson which is a better situation than before. So don't mind it for either team, get it for both, but prefer what San Fran did in this deal.

Short term this deal really hurts me, there is no way to replace what Magic did for my team, I am still lacking a stud pg so we will have to hope that an Eddie Johnson, Scott, Penny perimeter is balanced enough for us to be a real factor still. NY hit it on the head tho, we were in a totally untenable situation which led to a title last year but meant we had no real ability to keep the roster together beyond this year. So we struck early and moved one of the few assets people really valued on our roster.
We like Marion and Robertson a lot and Dudley, the picks etc are nice assets we can use to continue reshaping the roster. Eddie Johnson is a starting PG for this year and next year barring some deals it will be Kenny Smith with Robertson settling into the 3rd guard role.
I don't know how to vote for it, I think I did very well in terms of overall talent but got almost nothing that is a sure thing beyond Eddie Johnson who will be gone after this year

I've lost every trade I've ever made, so this makes sense.

Quite even but a slight edge to San Fran. Bayi gets 1 legit starter in Magic who should improve the team right away. I've never been a big fan of Rodman because I believe he is too 1 dimensional but Bayi did get back at least 3 very capable bench players.
San Fran is the winner to me because he got a lot for a 28 year old star. In our league at that age the value of stars crumbles fast around that age. Marion doesn't have the offensive game as yet but he will be a great all round player. Aside from that I think Kenyon Martin can be a good player. Bayi dealt that Toronto pick at the right time I believe, I don't think it remains top 10 for too long.

I actually voted Warriors by a lot simply because he received highly valued assets for a player that has always been a tweener in my opinion. Magic is a good player but where does he play? A lot remains to be seen as to where the Toronto pick ends up but getting Marion and then the pick on top of that, is definitely a good haul.

I'd just say that I think Magic is under appreciated, he has really grown into SF imo. It was really hard to trade him but Bayi promised to let me intern as an online hipster blogger

I HATE to agree with Sydney on anything, but I'm completely in line with his assessment. Last night I was blown away with what Warriors scored for Magic (the rest of those guys are filler, be honest), who has been a career underachiever in this league. Marion, who was a steal at #7 in the draft, a sure fire lotto pick, another pick, plus a stud defender in Robertson...it's a major win long term for SF. Even Eddie Johnson helps soften the short term loss...great job Warriors.
