Inspired by San Miguel’s top 3 Rookie of the Year candidates, I felt I would contribute a counterpart article discussing the even more coveted MVP race through the first 2 sims of the season. I understand this may be slightly more controversial, and I saw a lot of great candidates. These are the absolute top 3 I decided on.
Hakeem Olajuwon - LA Lakers
His team hasn’t had a great start. But surprise to no one, last year’s MVP winner is leading the pack again. He’s having a “down season”, but he’s putting up 32.9ppg (60% shooting) and 9.7 rebounds with 3.5 blocks, on only 33.5 minutes per night. This man is a beast. Perhaps the craziest thing? The league’s best inside player is also 7 for 14 from downtown. Small sample size, and a small reminder to guard this freak at all times.
John Stockton - San Miguel Beermen
Definitely not the point-monster you’d expect in an MVP candidate, but I’m sure many ABCA GMs agree this guy’s the most valuable player at the most treasured position. Thanks to a couple TC jumps, Stockton has become an insane player putting up 22.9ppg/7.6rpg/12.5apg/3.5spg on 49.8% shooting and a 4.82 A/T ratio. Coupled with an A+ Prd rating this guy is a fantastic asset to an SMB team that is trying to stay in contention despite trading away another great player in Patrick Ewing.
Jo Jo White - Seattle Supersonics
Sorry Zoran fans, I have to give this one to old man Jo Jo one more time (before he gets injured). He’s currently putting up career highs in ppg and rpg and close to his best in shooting % and 3p %. Combine that with his elite defense and this guy is as good @ age 33 as anyone could ever hope to be.
Very close also-rans: this was a large elite bunch to pick from;
Zoran Slavnic
Charles Barkley
Adrian Dantley
Shawn Kemp
Patrick Ewing
