The start of the Free Agency period always creates a buzz around the ABCA and this year was no different with a lot of teams having cap space to spend on free agents. The class wasn't short of star name players including the likes of Adrian Dantley, Julius Erving, Shawn Kemp, Oscar Schmidt, Mitch Richmond, Joe Dumars and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to name a few. However as the first few days of free agency past a recurring theme was happening, instead of looking for pastures new players were re-signing with their old teams. Here are the 15th players that we see as the best in the free agency class and where they re-signed and for how much.
Towers Re-sign SF Scottie Pippen for $76,300,000 over 5 years.
Pacers Re-sign SG Vinnie Johnson for $48,375,000 over 3 years.
Celtics Re-sign C Christian Laettner for $83,375,000 over 5 years.
Franca BC Re-sign SG Joe Dumars for $86,250,000 over 5 years.
Lakers Re-sign PF Fernando Martin for $84,000,000 over 5 years.
Bullets Re-sign SG Mitch Richmond for $86,250,000 over 5 years.
Boca Juniors BC Re-sign PF Anthony Mason for $86,250,000 over 5 years.
Franca BC Re-sign C David Robinson for $86,250,000 over 5 years.
ALBA Re-sign PF Oscar Schmidt for $103,500,000 over 5 years.
Knicks Re-sign C Elvin Hayes for $54,825,000 over 3 years.
Kings Re-sign C Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for $61,425,000 over 3 years.
Beermen Re-sign PF Shawn Kemp for $86,250,000 over 5 years.
Lakers Re-sign SF Ron Harper for $84,000,000 over 5 years.
Knicks Re-sign SF Adrian Dantley for $94,875,000 over 5 years.
Boca Juniors BC Re-sign SF Julius Erving for $91,113,750 over 4 years.
That is a lot of money in fact, $1,213,038,750 worth. So maybe money talks and we all know that the player's previous team can offer more money than anyone else and that is why the pattern is for these players to re-sign. Now lets take a look at some other signings that wasn't players re-signing with their previous team.
Mahram Sign C George McGinnis for $31,415,378 over 2 years.
Olympia Sign PG Pete Maravich for $18,405,000 over 2 years.
BC Zalgiris Sign SF John Havlicek for $20,679,040 over 2 years.
REAL Sign C Rik Smits for $30,600,000 over 3 years.
George McGinnis was the biggest name to change teams, signing a 2 year contract worth $31,415,378 and adds a veteran presence to their young core of Chris Mullin, Mookie Blaylock and Drazen Petrovic and should give them a good shot at winning their division in the up-coming season. Pete Maravich signed a two year contract with Olympia worth $18,405,000, he will most likely be moved on from their rebuilding project or give guidance to fellow FA signing point guard Doc Rivers. John Havlicek signed a $20,679,040 over 2 years contact giving them a winner off their bench as their strong offseason continues. Lastly Rik Smits was a good signing for Real giving them a skilled 7'4 big with room to grow on a team friendly 3 year contract worth $30,600,000.
Bulls Sign C Dikembe Mutombo for $846,000 over one year.
Spurs Sign SG Reggie Miller for $2,413,100 over 2 years.
Bulls Sign PF Roy Tarpley for $846,000 over one year.
And lastly a quick reminder to teams and their fans happy with their draft selections over the past couple of years, their is always a risk when drafting. Here are three guys picked in the high lottery, recently coming off their rookie contracts all signing for minimum contracts having failed to live upto their potential.
