Getting this in a bit late but hoping to still get the double PP.
1)Adrian Dantley
Adrian Dantley has really stepped his game after joining the Knicks a couple seasons ago. Credit goes to the coach who has setup a game plan that best suits his lights out shooting team. Dantley is coming off his best season yet averaging a career high 27 PPG on 50% shooting also providing good rebounding and assist numbers from the SF position. Dantley also took it to the next level in the playoffs averaging nearly 28 PPG on an efficient 57% shooting. Unfortunately, it did not equate to playoff success but even if this core is kept together, the Knicks could be just as strong next season. The only drawback to Dantley is he is asking for a lot of money over 4 years. He is 28 and history has shown players diminish quickly after 30, so, it can potentially be a bad situation. But with a guy like Dantley you have to take that chance. Not only a terror on the offensive end but he plays stifling defense as well equaling Adrian will get paid and whoever lands him will be very happy.
2)Oscar Schmidt
Most felt a few seasons ago that Oscar would be heading the way of Moses and languish on teams in a bench role at best after his fall in training camp. Fortunately, Schmidt began his resurgence right away and has continued to improve ever since giving hope to all GMs who have had players die in TC. Oscar is coming off an outstanding season where he averaged 26 PPG along with 9.5 RPG leading Berlin to a fantastic record. Although he will not give you the high blocked shots numbers he is still an outstanding post defender capable of locking down the opposing PF/C. Although he is also 28 similar to Dantley, Oscar does not rely on his athleticism as much as most so he should be at a similar level for the next 3-4 years. He will get a lot of money thrown at him and he will be worth it.
3)Shawn Kemp
Putting his skills and statistics aside, one of the main reasons Kemp is so high on this list is his age. At only 23 years old, no GM would lose sleep about giving him the 5 year max. Shawn has improved his statistics 4 years in a row since he entered the league as a raw youngster with tons of potential. Kemp averaged a career high 24.5 PPG on a ridiculous 62% shooting. Couple that with 9.5 RPG and 2.1 BPG and you have yourself an elite two way big man. Surprisingly he went up another level in the playoffs averaging 29 PPG on 71% shooting. As far as ratings go, Kemp is by far the most athletic big man in the league with the leaping ability of high flying shooting guards and good speed for a big. Over the years, he has refined his skills all around and is a threat on both ends of the court. With the loss of Ewing, re-signing Kemp will be priority no.1 for the Beermen this off season.
4)David Robinson
Miraculously despite his ratings fluctuating from season to season due to TC drops, DRob has somewhat stabilized into a really good centre. He is over 7 feet tall and has really good athleticism for a center which is likely his saving grace despite his falling ratings. He had a really nice season in Brazil averaging 21 PPG to go along with nearly 10 RPG and 2 BPG. Those types of centers are still a rare commodity at any time in history. If Robinson can gradually continue to improve, he could improve those numbers. According to very formidable sources, players do not feel the wrath of TC after the age of 27, so it is likely he in the clear from any drops for the next few years until aging kicks in. He is still young so if he were to get the 5 year max from Brazil, his production should justify the contract for at least the next 4 years. Make no mistake, other GMs around the league will be offering for his services so Brazil will have some competition.
5) Julius Erving
Julius Erving at the age of 30 is still producing at a high level. Last season he average 22 PPG to go along with 7 RPG and 4 APG. Although still playing a high level of basketball, the beginning of a downward spiral in legendary career has become evident. Dr. J should have no issues giving a team 20-6-5 for the next couple of years but if he were to be signed for 4 or even 5 years, we could be looking at a bad contract. Having said that, Julius still brings elite athleticism to the table coupled with his outstanding offensive skills and ability to defend both the post and perimeter make him a premiere SF in the ABCA. For the next 2-3 years we can expect high level production from him if he ages gracefully.
