Name: Derrick Coleman
Position: PF/C
Number: 44
DOB: June 21, 1967
Drafted: 1st Round (1st Pick)
Age when drafted: 22 (23 at start of first season)
College: Syracuse
Hometown: Detroit, Michigan
Height: 6’10”
Weight: 230 lbs
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STRENGTHS: Strong and fairly quick big man who 5 times averaged at least 18points and 10 boards 5 times in first 7 years. Really good rebounder (Career 9.7pergame) and good passer for a big (2.5 apg). Decent shot blocker (1.3 for career puts him in the top 100 all time). Has a solid shot out to 18 feet and from the line (.769%), Highly skilled post game but questionable shot selection.
WEAKNESSES: Major conditioning and durability issues. Just an average leaper. Bad shot selection led to career .447 FG%. Falls in love with a below average 3pt shot (.295%) and struggle with turnovers esp. when doubled (career 2.6)
SIGNIFICANT INFO: 1 time All Star, 1990-91 Rookie of the Year, 2 time All NBA Third Team, AP All American, HS McDonald’s All American. As talented as any player in the draft but very questionable maturity and conditioning issues may hinder his ability to reach his ceiling. Played 15 Years and never played in 80+ games (durability concerns).
