NAME: Andrew Toney
POSITION: Shooting guard
NUMBER: 22
DOB: November 23, 1957
AGE WHEN DRAFTED: 22 years old (1980 draft)
COLLEGE: Louisiana-Lafayette

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STRENGTHS:
Very nice scorer as a 2nd or 3rd option. He averaged 19.7ppg in 1982-83 (Moses Malone with 24.5ppg and Julius Erving with 21.4ppg were the first options) and 20.4ppg in 1983-84 (Moses 22.7ppg, Doc 22.4ppg), shooting high percentages (.501 and .527). At his best in the playoffs. He carried the 1981 76ers to the NBA finals by dominating the Celtics in the ECF (22.1ppg, .496). Unstoppable when he caught fire. He scored 34 points (14-23) in game 7. Great team player who was part of one of the best teams ever, the 1983 76ers who went 12-1 in the playoffs. Good passer (5.2ppg in 1984-85). A pioneer of the three point shooting with not so bad percentages (career .342, .424 in 1981-82). Great overall athlete.
WEAKNESSES:
Not the best defender in the league. Not an every night 30 points scorer. Horrible assists/turnovers ratio (1.4) for a guard. Lost 3.8 balls a game in 1983-84. One of the worst rebounders ever (career high 2.8rpg in 1982-83). Undersized for the 2 spot. Badly injured to a foot in his 6th season and never recovered.
SIGNIFICANT INFO:
Nicknamed the Boston Strangler because he dominated the Celtics every time.
They even traded for Dennis Johnson in order to stop him.
Twice All Star. Considered by Bill Simmons as the most underrated player in the 1980's.
Charles Barkley : "I thought he was the best player on the team when I got here. We had Bobby Jones, Moses Malone, and Julius Erving, but the only one I was in awe of was Andrew."
Pat Riley : "He's the greatest clutch player I've ever seen. The hell with Jerry West!"
Larry Bird : "He was the absolute best I've ever seen at shooting the ball at crucial times. We had nobody who could come close to stopping him. Nobody."
