San Francisco, CA - It's no surprise that a team with Hakeem Olajuwon and John Stockton are tearing apart the league. But when that league is essentially made up of a group of All-Star Teams, that gives people a reason to stand up and take notice.
The West Division - currently 7-1 and 3 games ahead of their conference-mates in the first annual ABCA Hall of Fame Divisional Tournament - rode a surprisingly balanced attack of Olajuwon, Stockton, and Ron Harper as they averaged more than 10 points per game higher than the league average. Their convincing lead does nothing to dissuade pundits who predicted a West takeover from day one.
If they don't win the tournament, at least the West can rest assured they have the best lineup in the Americas. Despite the West's claim of dominance, the rest of their conference is still searching for a winning record. The Central Division, South Division, and Northeast Division are a combined 7-13.
This parity is to be expected, as the schedule is heavy in inter-conference play, forcing teams to excel within their own conference before being matched up in the tournament finals. Both conferences are sitting at a nearly perfect .500 (America 14-14, Eurasia 13-13).
In the other conference, the EuroEast - a star-studded, purple-tinted mashup of new stars and stars in their prime - leads the rest of the Eurasian conference with a 5-2 record, including the league's only win over the West, where EuroEast neutralized Ralph Sampson, Ron Harper, and John Stockton behind a 35 / 13 game from Charles Barkley.
EuroWest looks like the league's sole defensive unit, keeping opponents to a horrible 29% 3pt% while posting one of the best defensive efficiencies in the tournament. It's a surprise, given their older stature - three starters are over 30 - but not as surprising when you see that all world defender Michael Jordan is anchoring the defense.
While individual achievements are rarely the focus of tournaments like this, the West's John Stockton (18.6 / 5.7 / 11.6 with 3.7 steals per game) and EuroEast's Charles Barkley (29.0 / 11.8 / 4.2 with 3.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game) lead their first place teams and ended up with some Player of the Month hardware. Barkley leads the league in points, and the West's Olajuwon and Stockton lead the league in rebounds and assists, respectively. Stockton also holds a tie for most steals (tied with Central's Dennis Johnson) and Central's Shaquille O'Neal holds the league lead in blocks.
