A season that started with some promise ended in a legitimate nosedive for the Traveling Dumpster Fire. With higher expectations coming off an improved team, fans were ready to put the past behind them...but the squad regressed into a mass of disappointment all the way around. Talks with Mexico City about an organizational philosophy shift were taken to heart, and this may or may not be the Boston team we see in the future.
The Good--Chris Webber is starting to realize his awesome potential at the 4 spot. Webber pumped in 22 points a game, and had a career high 51 in a late-season blowout loss to the Knicks. Just let that roll around in one's head for a second. He goes off for 51, and it's still not enough to make the game interesting. Vinny Del Negro played pretty well in a bench role that got him promoted to a starting spot, and Toni Kukoc did Toni Kukoc things this year.
The Bad--44 losses is a good start. The Stephon Marbury experiment kinda backfired. Mo Cheeks played OK, but his lack of shooting really didn't help matters. The -1.4 point differential, while improved, is still the sign of a bad team. The bench was better this year, but it was mitigated with the regression of Christian Laettner into a complimentary piece (maybe Webber's breakout had something to do with that). The defense (which slated to be bad) was legendarily bad...so it's kind of expected that the results would be what they are.
Fearless prediction: The Boston Celtics will be even worse next season and be in the lottery again. That's about as safe a prediction as it gets.
Good luck to those still playing...should be a great finish.
