Started at the Bottom and *sigh* We Still Here…(Eurasia Version)
Detroit, MI - Bayi Rockets, Milan Olympia, Athens Panathinaikos, Beijing Aoshen, Madrid REAL, Belgrade KK Partizan, Brazil Franca BC, Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons, Buenos Aires Boca Juniors BC, and Philadelphia Sixers.
What do all these teams have in common? They are all outside the playoff picture looking in. They are also all teams who are in play for the number one overall pick in the upcoming 2028 ABCA Draft. The three worst teams in the league – Cairo Zamalek, Tel Aviv Maccabi, and Chicago Bulls – sporting a combined 46-172 record have lost too many games to be considered for a top three pick. (Rule IV.XI: Anti-Tanking Policy)
With the coveted draft featuring possibly the deepest and most talented class of all-time, we’ll take a look at how teams will try to finish out the season in terms of either vying for the last spot or improving their odds of a top pick.
Eurasian Conference
Bayi Rockets (28-45)
With the team 5.5 games out of the playoff picture in the weaker Eurasian conference and fielding a relatively cupcake schedule to end the season – facing only two teams with .500+ records (Kings, Beermen) – there is a possibility they may try to sneak into the 8th seed, especially with Istanbul Anadolu Efes (33-39) facing six teams with .500+ records (Franca BC 2x, Mahram 2x, Beermen, BC Zalgiris). However, knowing that their GM values future assets over short-term potential and the very real opportunity of dropping down a couple spots (possibly as much as three spots is realistic), don’t expect an increased sense of urgency from the team.
Milan Olympia (27-47)
Right behind Bayi, Milan is the 10th seed in the Eurasian conference. However, seven games out of the playoff picture, they have almost no conceivable way of getting in. This is too difficult a task with two powerhouses (Towers, Beermen) being all but assured losses. Like the team ahead of them, Milan would best be served by a mediocre to bad two-week stretch to end the season. There are three teams beneath them (Athens Panathinaikos, Beijing Aoshen, and Madrid REAL) who are very legitimate threats to overtake in the sweepstakes for a top pick.
Athens Panathinaikos (25-49)
Blessed to be ahead of Bayi and Olympia, Athens is smiling all the way to the bank. Facing five .500+ teams (Lakers, Globetrotters, ALBA, Kings, BC Zalgiris), they’re all but guaranteed to remain or drop in the standings. Most importantly, they won’t have to ‘rest’ any players or drastically change their game plan for the games. They could drop as much as three spots (to become the fourth pick pre-lotto), which would put them in prime contention for the number one pick – see Anti-Tanking Policy for more details – and this has to be some good news for Athens’ fans.
Beijing Aoshen (24-48)
Beijing is in a neutral spot themselves. Facing a really difficult schedule at the end, they’re going up against powerhouses like the Kings, Beermen (2x), Spurs, and Titans. However, things are made difficult for them with the Bulls, whom they regrettably have to face twice, and Belgrade KK Partizan, who’s vying to retain the pre-lotto fourth spot in the standings. Realistically, if they beat the Bulls twice and Belgrade KK Partizan, they open themselves up to rising in the standings and actually lowering their chances of the top pick. That’s not even taking into account a team like Anadolu Efes (the 8th seed in Eurasia with a 33-39 record) who could conceivably drop the game.
Madrid REAL (24-49)
Good News: London Towers, San Miguel Beermen, Moscow CSKA (34-40 record, though), BC Zalgiris, Indiana Pacers and Tehran Mahram (2x).
Bad News: Philadelphia Sixers, Milan Olympia.
There is a possibility Madrid drops all 9 remaining games, but it’s slim. With two of their opponents in tight contention and looking to “have a rough end of season”, it’ll be tough to come out of their without at least one or two wins. This may let them retain the number five seed, but as mentioned earlier, the teams they are fighting don’t have much tougher schedules and one or two wins may be enough to propel them to a number six or seven seed. If the team manages to sneak in a win or two against the powerhouses or .500+ teams, they’re looking at jumping quite a ways higher. This has to have their GM worried.
Belgrade KK Partizan (22-52)
Ah, the cream of the crop. Snuggled firmly into the number four spot, there is very little chance of them ‘screwing things up’ and jumping multiple spots. They’ll experience five consecutive beatdowns (Bullets, CSKA, Kings, Titans, and Sonics) before they face three close adversaries: Maccabi, Aoshen, 76ers. However, what’s making this favorable is the fact that Maccabi needs to play to win to try to jump to the number four spot and this plays directly into Belgrade’s plot. Partizan will have to hope for the best that Maccabi doesn’t give up (and cause Belgrade to win) and tries to play spoiler.
P.S. It’ll be hilarious to watch the last two games of the season against Aoshen and 76ers. I expect the top players to finish the season playing 20 minutes per game for all three aforementioned teams.
Note: Not all teams have their (or any) 1st round picks this year. This was merely meant to be a satire article and make fun of our teams.
