Name: Rafael Araujo
Position: C
Number: 55
DOB: August 12, 1980
Age when drafted: 23 (8th overall)
College: BYU
Hometown: São Paulo, Brazil
Height: 6’11”
Weight: 275lbs
STRENGTHS: Size and strength; very large upper body. Overall very athletic for his size. Had an average short-range (very short range) jumper for a guy his size.
WEAKNESSES: Araujo was drafted 8th overall by Rob Babcock, who had just been hired as the new GM of the Toronto Raptors. The pick drew instant backlash from Raptors fans, who were expecting the team to select Andre Iguodala (Iguodala was drafted with the very next pick). For some reason, Babcock thought Araujo had the potential to become a dominant big man; some say he referred to Aruajo the “Brazilian Shaq” (Babcock would later trade away a disgruntled Vince Carter for next to nothing, and was fired shortly thereafter.) Arauajo would only play parts of 3 seasons in the NBA, and only 139 total games. At all times, Araujo appeared uncomfortable on the floor, no matter the situation. Never averaged more than 13 minutes a game in any season. His biggest problem was not a lack of fundamentals; he could do the basic things somewhat right. He just was out smarted regularly by every opponent, making Araujo appear as though he had no in-game basketball experience whatsoever.
