This Free Agent class is littered with post players and swing forwards but if you’re looking for a guard you might want to hit the phone lines for some help. There is not an elite level or even next level point guard in the class and each player who can give you time at the two spot has obvious flaws. Big men are abundant from elite level to proven vets and even a few young players in between. Today, we’ll look at the top players from each position and what we think they are worth.
Point Guards:
Pete Maravich – 3 Years, 27 Mill (9 per) with Team Option. Anything over 10 million is overpaying this veteran point guard who still can’t play defense. Still high level scorer.
Michael Ray Richardson – 3 years, 21 Mill (7 per) with Team Option. MRR is an elite defender who can still lead a team. Won’t give you much on offense outside of 6-7 assists.
Pee Wee Kirkland – 2 years, 14 Mill (7 per). Pee Wee is aging and a player as bad at defense as anyone who has gotten his career minutes. Still high level scorer, distributor though.
Johnny Moore – 3 years, 19.5 Mill (6.5 per) with Team Option. Johnny Moore is probably the best all-around PG on the marker but isn’t great anywhere and would likely struggle as a key starter.
Doc Rivers – 4 years, 25 Mill (6.25 per). Doc is going to give you a nice level production from the point spot but will never be efficient with limited inside scoring and strength.
Shooting Guards:
Mitch Richmond – 4 years, 52 Mill (13 per). Mitch scores as well as most and still plays defense. Hard to find an efficient 21-4-5 guy but he is it. Will likely be maxed hurting his value.
Ron Harper – 4 years, 44 Mill (11 per) with Team Option. Ron is likely the best defender in the game and still gives you efficient offense from inside the arc. You’ll need scorers around him. Passes well.
Vinnie Johnson – 2 Years, Max with Team Option. Vinnie is the perfect guy to hit with the 2 year TO max. He can still give you extremely high level play and may be worth the 2nd year.
Danny Ainge – 3 years, 27 Mill (9 per) with Team Option. Prototypical 3 and D SG who spaces floor as starter or 6th man. Limited athletically and in other areas but crucial to success.
Andrew Gaze – 3 Years, 24 Mill (8 per). Extremely talented shooter on 2nd deal. Will play some defense and give you Top 5-10 shooting from outside. Size to play both wing positions.
Edit:
Joe Dumars – 4 Years, Max. Extremely talented. Well rounded. Athlete and can defend, score and past. Elite level SG.
Small Forwards:
Adrian Dantley – Max, Max. He’s simply the best of 2 players (both SF’s) in Free Agency. Elite level scorer and players defense as high level with athleticism. Easy.
Julius Erving – 4 years, Max with Team Option. Extremely versatile and well rounded. Would be best PF if we viewed him as that. Still, given his age… I couldn’t go 5 years or even 4 without TO.
John Havlicek – 2 Years, 25 Mill (12.5 per) with Team Option. Hondo still can get it done in the right role and be a game changer for a very good team. Declining though.
Scottie Pippen – 4 years, 36 Mill (9 per) with Team Option. His athleticism and defense would make me take a risk knowing anything on offense is a plus. Can play multiple positions as elite 6th man too.
Eric Beugnot – 4 years, 32 Mill (8 per) with Team Option. Has had a lot of PP put into him and gives you a versatile option at the 3 or multiple positions off the bench.
Power Forwards:
Shawn Kemp – Max, Max. Elite athleticism and skills from the big man make him a great option. Can even play center if need be. Hard to find a more efficient player at his age.
Elvin Hayes – 3 years, Max. He’s a guy who can still lead your team to a title. It’ll cost yah cap wise these days but worth it with what he provides. May be a center now though.
Wes Unseld – 3 years, 40.5 mill (13.5 per) with Team Option. Wes is still the ultimate glue guy who has played 80+ games his entire career with numbers of 12.3, 9.4, 4.3 and has had best years last couple.
Oscar Schmidt – 4 years, 52 mill (13 per) with Team Option. Oscar has had his ups and downs but been elite the past few years. Still lacks in a few areas you wish your PF didn’t but not a big concern here.
6 Guys worth over 8 Mill per year (Mason, McAdoo, Martin, Kellog, Cosic, Adams). All different skill sets and shows depth of the bigs.
Centers:
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – 4 years, Max with Team Option. His decline has become evident but he still plays almost every game at the highest level you could want. 4th or 5th year scares me though.
David Robinson – 4 Years, Max. He is only 26 despite what seems like a rocky career. High level athlete for position with the size and skill set to lead a team still.
Christian Laettner – 4 years, 52 Mill (13 per). While he isn’t a max guy due to his defense, Christian can score as well as any and has the size and youth to hold it down for the next 4 years.
Darrall Imhoff – 3 Years, 36 Mill (12 per) with Team Option. At this point you have to value him as a 25-30 mpg guy but that doesn’t mean he can’t change the course of your team.
4 Guys worth over 8 Mill per year (McGinnis, Reed, Smith, Edwards). All can still give you talent in the post as a veteran.
