Bulls Reeling After Loss of Beloved Team Physician Dr. Derek Shepherd

One week later, the news still doesn’t seem real to the Chicago Bulls team – their beloved physician, Dr Derek Shepherd, died in heroic and tragic circumstances. While reports appear to still be lacking in detail, the long-time doctor and friend to the Bulls died in a car accident after pulling over on Route 73 to aid the victims of another crash. After saving the life of two badly injured accident victims, Dr Shepherd was leaving the scene when he himself was struck by a transportation truck. Dr. Shepherd later died in hospital where his brain injury proved irreparable. His wife, Meredith Grey, chose to withdraw life-support care when it was confirmed the doctor had suffered brain death.
As shocking and sudden as the news came, it wasn’t a surprise to many that Derek lost his life trying to save others. As a child, Derek Shepherd witnessed the murder of his father, a life changing event that shaped his career and passion for saving lives. As his career progressed to great heights, Derek moved on to research and government projects, freeing up time to pursue another passion of his – sports. In 2004 Dr. Shepherd was appointment lead team physician of the Chicago Bulls. His love of sports and basketball in particular made him far more of an honorary coach than just a team doctor. Dr. Shepherd was seen at most practices and team outings and was well loved by the entire roster.
Dr. Shepherd was no stranger to life-threatening situations, having experienced more than his fair share of terrifying experiences. In 2011 Shepherd was shot in the chest by the distraught husband of a former patient, he suffered serious injuries. One year later, the doctor was involved in a small plane crash that resulted in the deaths of two colleagues and a severe injury to his hand and arm.
Derek Shepherd is survived by his 4 sisters, mother, wife and 2 children. In an even more upsetting twist of fate, his wife Meredith discovered after his death that she is pregnant with their third child.
The Chicago Bulls announced plans to replace the statue outside of the United Center with a new one of the recently deceased doctor. Bulls GM Dave Seer was noticeably upset when asked for his comments, “Derek was a dear friend to us all. He wasn’t an employee or a doctor here, he was a valued and loved friend whom we will miss dearly. We commit as an entire organization to take care and provide for Merideth and their children.”
Derek Shepherd was buried yesterday is an intimate ceremony attended by family and the Bulls organization. Dr. Shepherd was 43 years old at the time of his passing. Shepherd was well known for his trademark saying, uttering it each time he performed a surgery – “It’s a beautiful day to save lives”.
