Pros: At 6-7 and 225 pounds, Shaffer has a great frame for the SF position. Shaffer is also blessed with a decent amount of athleticism and natural strength, which he is learning to use more effectively on the offensive side of things. Already a decent jump shooter, Shaffer could mature into a very nice 2nd or 3rd option offensively. Shaffer also brings a dynamic defensive game, as adept guarding on the perimeter as he is guarding the post. Defensively he should improve as he continues to learn how to best use his physical gifts.
Cons: His offensive game has some holes in it, namely in terms of his shooting range which has never extended to the 3-point line, which is a good deal shorter in college. His hands and passing have been liabilities in the past, holding him back from being a truly threatening offensive player. While scouts are currently high on his potential defensive abilities, it is important to note that these have not yet been fully developed. Has a lower ceiling than other wings in this draft, which could be enough to cause him to slide down the draft.
Overall: While Chet Walker has been getting the most attention as the best SF prospect after Havlicek, a good argument can be made for Shaffer. Less of a prolific shooter, Shaffer makes up for this with his solid inside game and dynamic defensive abilities. Shaffer can likely guard from the 2 all the way up to the 4 if need be. Also expect to get a decent number of rebounds from Shaffer, a facet of Walker's game that is rather undeveloped. As it stands the draft is rather up in the air after the 3rd pick, so where Shaffer falls could vary drastically come draft night.
Projected: 8-14
