Name: Mark Jackson Position: Point Guard Number: 13 DOB: April 1, 1965 Age when drafted: 22 (1987 Draft) College: St John's Hometown: Brooklyn, New York Height: 6'1 Weight: 180 lbs |
STRENGTHS: Mark Jackson's biggest strength was his passing, as evident during his rookie season where he averaged 10.6apg and in the 1996-97 season where he averaged a league high 11.4apg. He finished with a career average of 8apg. He finished in the top 10 for assists in the league 12 times and sits 4th in the history of the NBA with 10,335 career assists. He was also a good defensive point guard out on the perimeter and was strong enough to guard in the post as well. Effective at stealing the ball away from his opponents also, is ranked 28th in NBA history with 1,608 career steals, with by far his best season in his rookie campaign with 2.5spg. Also a decent rebounder for a point guard.
WEAKNESSES: He wasn't much of a scorer in the league throughout his career and although he developed a decent 3pt shot later on he didn't have that range when he first entered the league. Although relatively strong for a point guard he wasn't the greatest athlete.
SIGNIFICANT INFO: Jackson increased popularity of the "tear drop" shot. Is the only player to be named rookie of the year who was drafted outside the lottery. The five second back to the basket violation rule was put in effect in part due to Jackson backing down his opposing point guards in the post for 15 or more seconds at a time.
