So in the past two days the NCAA votes to allow the big 5 conferences (and Notre Dame) to rule themselves and the courts have ruled that the NCAA violated anti-trust laws in the Ed O'Bannon case...where do things go from here in college sports?

Not really sure what's going on. You got a link I could read about it on so I can then talk about it?

Essentially. The Power 5 are gonna create a huge gap between themselves and others. Think D1 vs D1-AA ... I've been talking to a few coaches and someone who works in Athletic Department. It will come down to just how large of a gap they want to create. How much they wanna give kids, etc.

I wouldn't say "the start" as much as I would say it would be finally legal to do so lol. I've always expected some major universities give players a helping hand.
The new rules will really hurt the programs not only out of the Big 5 conferences, but also the programs in the Big 5 who don't have the resources to compete with Alabama, Notre Dame, Florida State and many others. Recruiting is going to get more lopsided.

So wait...these dudes will get free fucking college AND paid? This country makes me weep. I've never bought into this argument...a scholarship is a great thing for the guy playing water polo at Pepperdine, because how much is the school really making off him? But college football and college basketball are billion dollar industries...with a B. Why shouldn't the high end players get compensated other than a scholarship they don't care about, since they'd go straight to the pros if they were allowed anyway. Maybe I'm the naive one...

I wouldn't say naive. It's probably more the fact that I've been somewhere between poor-middle class my whole life and could never afford a loan to go to school to better my situation that I look at a free college trip as enough. These guys should value the education, since it seems like at least 60% of these guys are fucking broke 2 years out of the league because they are stupid with money and don't have much to fall back on.

I got into a discussion about this last night... The money they get for the hours they put in don't compute at all.
Mandatory 12 hours of class, 20 hours of practice, 6+ hours of film, workouts, appearances, 4+ hour gamedays, usually study hall + any work they have to do for classes
You're talking about kids working as many hours as most (certainly over 40 hours a week they demand of the kids, none of that is optional) and unless they are going to an expensive out of state school, aren't even getting a good deal as far as total amount of scholarship. Imagine if you're a key player as well. What you have to put in to keep your scholarship (very few schools offer 4 year rides, they are renewable each season) vs. what you're actually legally getting is not fair. We could make the argument for a school like LSU that profits 30+ million a season from the football program that if each kid got say 5,000 a year (x85 scholarship kids = 425K) that it isn't even close to hurting the margin plus puts money in kids pockets who well, for the hours/effort/entertainment they provide would be making a ton more.

KK using LSU as an example, shock of the century Only because I know LSU makes over 30 Mill in profit off of football, I've seen the finances from the athletic department. I could have used any big university that I am sure turns as much or more of a profit, that had nothing to do with the argument. Lol

Most college atheltic programs are not profitable...that is the big complication in all of this. Exactly. I have a hard time believing a Power 5 conference team isn't profitable in Football though. Normally football carries the other programs. Now if you want to get into a debate about the money in athletic programs and look at it from a business perspective, you've got to include Title IX in the discussion.

Even with the huge TV money running in, most Power 5 schools are not profitable right now or for the next 10 or so years because they are putting all that tv money into trying to keep up with the big time programs.

That's some shitty run programs with the amount of money coming in... I understand upgrading facilities but you've gotta get donations + past profits to make that happen. They don't count those into their yearly operating expenses.

Right what they are doing is bonding them using a portion of that years TV money and then they pay it back over 10-20 years depending on the bond
So all that TV money gets eaten up quickly
