As I said in chat, I think the trade is "interesting" (my code for OMG WTF is one of these teams thinking). In this case, I like the trade for Sydney. McHale has all the potential in the world to be the top PF in the league. He already has shown some decent flashes (I'm not going to expect him to have RotY numbers when he's playing next to Walton, Hondo and the rest) and has PP invested in him already...the sky is the limit with him. Gilmore, on the other hand, is a known commodity. After 4 seasons, we know how good he is...a very good center who never challenge his position for the top spot. Will Gilmore ever be a top 3 center? Will have ever be better than he is right now? Not to say what he is isn't great...but I'll take the guy who is on the rookie contract with all the potential in the world over the guy about to make 14ish mil a year to be a top 10 center. (Yes, I intentionally oversimplified my argument...deal with it).
And before you respond, of course McHale could burn out and never reach his potential...Gilmore could also turn into Goodrich and start falling off next year for no specific reason. You never can tell what TC will do. The question is in the next three seasons, was this deal going to make Harlem more of a title contender, cause that's the only reason to give up McHale. I just don't see it being the case.
