Pros: Michael Cooper comes into the league as one of the most impressive defensive prospects the league has ever seen. Not only does Cooper come in already capable of defending on the perimeter, but he projects to be capable of defending in the post as well. Long term he should be able to generate steals and blocks, meaning he should be able to defend anywhere from point guard to small forward without any issue. Throw in his ability to pass the ball and knock down the three, and Cooper is a unique utility player that should give opposing players fits on both ends of the court.
Cons: Cooper is an enigma in that he is the anti-Adrian Dantley. He does so many things well, but he doesn't score on the inside, which is key for a small forward (where you hope to take advantage of his special defensive advantages). In fact, he doesn't project to be a big time scorer anywhere, meaning you are tying up a guard spot exclusively on defensive. While that may work well for rebounding centers who shot block, how many teams draft shooting guards who play tough defense but don't score?
Overall: Michael Cooper is a tough nut to crack when it comes to projecting where he goes in this draft. From a talent standpoint, he has a lot of potential in a lot of interesting places, and someone will jump to grab him. But even if you see him as an elite defender who compliments a high scoring point guard, is that really someone you draft in the top 6? In the top 10? Where do you call that name and who builds their lineup with that player in mind? Cooper might be the biggest mystery in the draft...the league scout currently has him at 4 (which is ridiculous)...would it be crazy to see him go 10 spots later? I don't think so...
Projection: #11-14 (?)
