LONDON [AP] -- The inaugural ABCA Legends off-season is almost over. Tomorrow the coaching carousel will open and coaches will sign with their new teams and then it's practically the preseason where virtually every team has a chance to win the title.
Many team's owners, general managers, and fans are contemplating what advantages they can get by hiring/firing staff to their team. But just because you have hiring/firing power, does that mean you should use it? You don't fire crazy!
There are two schools of thought on this.
Some are content sitting back and watching what happens. Others are going all in to hire 2-3 Head Coaches to fill in as Assistant Coaches as their team develops. So what are the Wayne Jarvises (pro)/George Bluths (con) of both sides of this coin?
Well, a lot of it comes down to coin. Right now there are more teams with cap than there will ever be again in the league. Some teams have already opted to release inexpensive Assistants (signed long-term) in the hopes of landing one in Free Agency but at what price? What will the rest of the league pay? How many teams need help?
But what if you have a bum of a coach or a scout on your roster? Should you not try to improve your situation? Yeah, of course you should. Especially your scout. If you can improve you should, but is a lateral move a smart idea? That's debatable.
Because you need to fire a coach before you can open up talks with one you are put at an immediate disadvantage. You're immediately and abruptly in a place where you have a need to fill and you will need to fill it. Is that a place where you want to be?
I bet most teams are coming in with bids higher than what they just paid their assistants they fired but after seeing it for the first time it will be your job to find the right bargain player who can help your team.
If an ABCA team spends more than their allotted $5 million Coach Cap it will come out of their Team Hard Cap which could make it difficult to retain players in the future. In today's world every dollar counts and it seems that even the mighty sports franchises aren't even immune to that.
The Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers and several other teams have already amnestied/fired coaches and have been seen as prime players in the coaching market.
The ABCA Coach Free Agency is set to take place Friday at 2PM (ABC/ESPN). Check your local listings for exact times and channels.
