TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) - Now that the much anticipated ABCA creation draft has been finalised, we decide to take a look to see which players were drafted by Tel Aviv and how the roster is shaping up for the start of the season. Here we review the first five picks of the creation draft and then summarise some of the later picks.
John Beckman
Point Guard
29 years old
John Beckman was drafted in the first round by Tel Aviv with the 11th overall pick in the ABCA creation draft. It was a pick which raised some eyebrows around the league with some believing that he was picked too soon with bigmen like Alex Groza and Neil Johnston still on the board. But Beckman is now the star in Tel Aviv, and although he isnt your typical point guard he is definately exiting to watch with many Tel Aviv fans exicted to see how he performs come the start of the season. Beckman is someone that uses his quickness to attack the rim but also has the jumpshot to go with it, with makes him a dangerous offensive weapon. Although he is an exciting offensive player, he also plays with a style of grit on the defensive end and does like to get his team mates involved. Beckman who has already been declared as team captain, is known as the "Babe Ruth of Basketball", time will tell how far he can lead this team come the start of the season.
Chuck Share
Center
26 years old
Tel Aviv drafted the 26 year old 7'0 bigman with the 20th pick in the second round of the ABCA creation draft. Share isnt known as much of a scorer but he will help the team in many different ways, especially on the defensive end. He will serve as the main rim protector for the team with his shot blocking abilities that will have players thinking twice of attacking the rim while he is defending it. Share is also a good defensive rebounder and post defender which will lead him to be a key anchor on the defensive end. With the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan and Dolph Schayes around the league Share will provide a key role in slowing them down. With John Beckman's scoring drafted in the first round, Share looks like a good fit next to him to install the defensive mindset into the team.
LeRoy Edwards
Power Forward
29 years old
Next up in the third round Tel Aviv selected power forward LeRoy Edwards with the 11th pick. LeRoy is a big physical presence in the post and is known as one of the strongest players in the league. He uses that strength to help him score around the basket where he is efficient with either his left or right hand, his strength also helps him on the defensive end and allows him to stop opposing players from getting deep position down in the post. After a decorated college career with Kentucky where he was an All-American and Helms Player of the Year, Edwards will look to carry on his great career with Tel Aviv.
Huseyin Ozturk
Point Guard
29 years old
In the 4th round Tel Aviv selected another point guard in Huseyin Ozturk, a 29 year old from Turkey. It was a bit of a strange pick with John Beckman already on the Tel Aviv roster and neither one seems to be capable of playing SG, but after drafing Ozturk, Tel Aviv general manger explained his decision, "Although we arguably had more pressing needs we were a little suprised to see Huseyin still on the board so we couldnt pass up the opportunity to draft him. We feel he can become a great 6th man for us and will be able to play alongside John for large portions of games, giving us another ball handler in the backcourt and will provide us with different options against certain oppositions". Ozturk is a guard that can do most things, he can score, pass, defend and also is quick with good strength for a guard which should help him when he plays minutes alongside Beckman.
Andy Phillip
Shooting Guard
27 year old
27 year old Andy Phillip was the next player drafted by Tel Aviv in the 5th round. Phillip projects to be the starting 2 guard for Tel Aviv come start of the season. He is a solid scorer from the outside with a good jumpshot all the way out to three point range which should fit well next to John Beckman at point guard. Not only that but Phillip is also a good ball handler and a very good passer which should help the flow of the offense and ease the burden on Beckman to do all the distributing which, on paper is another reason why he should be a good fit next to Beckman. What lets him down is his average defense on the perimeter but his quickness should help him stay infront of his man.
Thats it for the first 5 rounds in the creation draft for Tel Aviv, lets take a look at some of the picks that were made in the later rounds.
Tel Aviv drafted Polish Andrzej Pstrokonksi in the 8th round of the creation draft which looked to be good value for him. Andrzej is a 26 year old Power Forward who seems to do a litte bit of everything and seems to have potential to improve over the next few years. He should provide good minutes off the bench for Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv drafted B.H. Born in the 7th round to provide backup at the center position, he is a good shotblocker and rebounder looks to be a solid backup for Chuck Share. In the 6th round Tel Aviv drafted Howie Dallmar who looks like the will be the starting Small Forward for Tel Aviv come the start of the season. He seems to be a similar player to Andy Phillip with good scorer and passing abilities which should keep the offense flowing but his defense needs some work.
