1. Rick Barry
Boca Juniors BC
Analysis: You usually hope for a homerun with the first overall, but this may not be. Last year they drafted Dave Debusschere who plays the same position as Barry. Barry could slide over to the guard position, but considering that they had a need at center with two good players in Reed and Nate available, this is an interesting choice. Barry has a great skillset and will be an outstanding player. In many ways, this could make Boca a very dynamic offensive team with Dave, Groza, and Barry.
Grade: A-
2. Sergei Belov
CKSA Moscow
Analysis: This was a great pick-up for Moscow. They were able to pick-up a great player that fits their needs. When you look at the talent around Belov, you could see them slipping into the playoffs next year. This isn't exactly an old team and adding Belov creates a great core of guys going forward.
Grade: A
3. Willis Reed
Toronto Huskies
Analysis: The Huskies really were able to add a great piece in Reed that compliments their team. With a core a young players and playing beside Boozer, Reed slides into a great situation. With the addition of Wilkens and Reed, this is a team that should make a drastic jump in the standings next year.
Grade: A
4. Nate Thurmond
Tehran Mahram
Analysis: Considering the calibre of Nate over the rest of the class this was an obvious choice. With Tehran in full rebuild, they could have gone in any direction, but grabbing a great defensive center is a good cornerpiece for a rebuild. Considering the complete lack of talent surrounding him, he could have a very good year or a very bad year.
Grade: A-
5. Kresmir Cosic
Tehran Mahram
Analysis: At this point there could have been a lot of possible choices, but Mahram went in a different direction. Cosic is very raw and after taking Nate, they look to be building around post players. Kresmir is a risky choice and given the fact there are other players that are more game-ready this could be a bad pick.
Grade: B
6. Gail Goodrich
Mexico City Titans
Analysis: Titans are another team building from scratch. I think this was a fantastic choice, since building around a point guard is a great idea for any team. Goodrich is very interesting guard, he has great passing and offensive potential. His defence is his biggest problem, but his offence should make up for it.
Grade: A-
7. Bob Love
Los Angeles Lakers
Analysis: Love fills a need for the Lakers for a wing, but at the same time I am not sure this is the best pick. Although Love is thought of highly for his defensive prowess, the question should be whether that is enough for a guy this high in the draft. This is by no means a terrible pick, Love should help a team that isn't great defensively.
Grade: B+
8. Billy Cunningham
Mexico City Titans
Analysis: After taking Goodrich, the addition of Cunningham makes sense. Titans look to be going for offence over defence, both guys lack defence but are great offensive players. Cunningham is a great choice given the lack of depth at small forward across the league, Cunningham could take advantage of that and be a great scorer. This pick really compliments their earlier pick.
Grade: A-
9. Jiri Zidek
Franca BC
Analysis: This is a baffling pick for Brasil, he is loaded with players at the wing. I can get a gm favouring a specific position, but this is ridiculous to have this many solid wings wasted. Zidek is a great player and could be useful, but he will get lost in the shuffle. This is bizzare with their lack of post players and need for a starting point guard.
Grade: D
10. Tal Brody
Atlanta Hawks
Analysis: I am not sure about trading down to get Chet, but Brody fits a huge need for the Hawks. Hawks have a lot of great pieces, but they badly needed a point guard. They still need to add to this squad, but Brody could develop into a great starter for the Hawks.
Grade: A-
11. Jiri Zednicek
Mexico City Titans
Analysis: This is somewhat of an obvious pick for the Titans, with a need for a shooting guard. Zednicek isn't as great of an offensive specimen as Goodrich and Cunningham, but why would you need another one. Zednicek also gives them something they don't have in perimeter defence. He is definately a great addition for the Titans.
Grade: B+
12. Paul Silas
Mexico City Titans
Analysis: After taking three good offensive players, this pick makes sense given their lack of post players. Silas has a great defensive game and is a good rebounder, which should compliment their other picks. He was probably a bit of a reach, but this is a good pick-up for the Titans.
Grade: B+
13. Jerry Sloan
Beijing Aoshen
Analysis: Beijing looks like a team in flux, as they don't have much on their roster. This may just be some guys testing free agency, but it isn't good to see a roster that bare in the offseason. I guess with Bridges, this is a sign of Aoshen focusing on defence. Sloan is very ready and is easily a starter already. This pick isn't bad, but looking at the roster, I would think there are guys that would be useful long term.
Grade: B
14. Happy Hairston
Mexico City Titans
Analysis: The only need left for the Titans was a post player. Hairston is rounded and could be a good offensive contributer or just a solid defensive guy. I am not saying he is going to be their starter, but this allows the Titans to field a starting line-up of rookies. I doubt their done rebuilding as this team still needs more.
Grade: B
15. Jeff Mullins
KK Partizan
Analysis: This is a solid choice, by KK. They are in for a long rebuild as they don't have any assetts. Mullins is a good choice as he is a good all round player and with a team that only has Korac atleast he is something.
Grade: B
16. Bill Bradley
Franca BC
Analysis: Like Brasil's other choice this one is strange. With a team loaded with wings, he takes another one. To put this in perspective, he has 5 good wings and 0 good post players. You could make the arguement, he is creating a combo on the wing of Bradley and Zidek, but why wouldn't you trade your other wings or just draft positional needs.
Grade: D
17. Gus Johnson
London Towers
Analysis: Johnson is ready to step in right away and given the Towers roster, he could be a great addition at 17. Gus is a solid choice, given the Towers fondness of having defensive wings. There were a lot of options at this point, but this one gives them something they could use right away.
Grade: B+
18. Bodhan Liszko
New York Knicks
Analysis: Bodhan has a good skillset for a center coming into the league. When you look at this team they have Schayes and Rodgers, they really could use guys that help them now. Liszko is a long term project, which I think hurts them right now.
Grade: B-
19. Walt Hazzard
Franca BC
Analysis: This is the only Brasil pick that makes sense. Hazzard fits one of their biggest needs at point guard, he has the ability to score, pass, and defend. It's hard to predict if he'll develop into anything, but he is the best available point guard.
Grade: B
20. Mel Counts
Lagos Islanders
Analysis: With a team in need of some offence, Counts could step in and being their top option. This goes against the defensive prowess of their other players, but this is a player that is useful. I am not saying, he is the answer in Lagos, but this could be a step in the right direction.
Grade: B
21. Dick Van Arsdale
Tehran Mahram
Analysis: Tehran doesn't have anything outside of post players, so this is a good choice. He has a skillset more suited for a point guard. This team really just needs talent and they couldn't go wrong here.
Grade: B-
22. Tom Van Arsdale
Washington Bullets
Analysis: Bullets have some great players, but needed some wings bad. Arsdale won't be able to help this year, but for the long term he could be useful.
Grade: B
23. Jim Barnes
London Towers
Analysis: After grabbing Gus Johnson earlier, this fits in a similar mold, another player who is ready to play. Barnes is a depth guy, but his defence and rebounding could be useful for London right away.
Grade: B+
24. Larry Jones
Tehran Mahram
Analysis: After picking Dick Van Arsdale, I am not sure that this makes any sense. Jones is a really great shooter, but not much else. Tehran picks up another assett that could be a bust or useful.
Grade: C+
25. Eddie Miles
Philadelphia 76ers
Analysis: 76ers pretty much have nothing on their roster right now. Miles is a good shooter, but can't do much else. This is a risky pick, since he isn't ready and is a liability in a lot of ways. Miles isn't a horrible pick, especially considering the 76ers roster.
Grade: C
26. Jim King
Tehran Mahram
Analysis: King is an adequate pick for Tehran. He doesn't really fill a need since Mahram has other points of similar calibre. For a team that needs to rebuild, I am not sure how King works into their plans.
Grade: D+
27. Tom Thacker
Sydney Kings
Analysis: Thacker makes sense for the Kings, given he has a lot of potential to be a defensive guard. Kings don't have any real needs, but this is a good depth addition.
Grade: C+
28. Art Heyman
CSP Limoges
Analysis: Limoges could have gone any direction with this pick, but they chose to address some wing depth. At 28, Heyman is a solid selection.
Grade: C
29. Luscious Jackson
Tehran Mahram
Analysis: For a team that picked up Nate and Cosic, Luscious should end up as a back-up. This team is in total rebuild, so he has time to improve.
Grade: C-
30. George Wilson
REAL Madrid
Analysis: Wilson looks to end up as a depth post who can rebound off the bench. He still needs work, but he could end up being useful off the bench.
Grade: C
Boca Juniors BC
Analysis: You usually hope for a homerun with the first overall, but this may not be. Last year they drafted Dave Debusschere who plays the same position as Barry. Barry could slide over to the guard position, but considering that they had a need at center with two good players in Reed and Nate available, this is an interesting choice.
